Eligibility
Eligibility in the past has been limited to NYI members at Nazarene churches.
Quizzing Eligibility Rules, Section V, Part B on page 25 of the 2002 version of the Official Rules and Guidelines for NYI Bible Quizzing Ministry:
B. Guidelines for participation of non-NYI members
- Any youth who is not an NYI member of a local church may participate in NYI Bible Quizzing Ministry at zone/district invitationals if approved by the district quiz directory in consultation with the District NYI Council in advance of competition.
- Eligibility for participation in the local, zone, district, or regional final events shall be a reflection of the ministry focus and/or event focus as determined by the local, district or regional NYI council (see the sections regarding Ministries in the Ministry Plans, Articles V).
The rules go on to state that at the national level, they will accept anyone deemed eligible by the region.
The Ministries section of the current (2005) NYI Ministry Plan contains the following:
- Evangelism - The NYI develops and implements a variety of ongoing ministries and special events to reach young people for Christ.
- Discipleship - The NYI develops and implements a variety of ongoing ministries and special events to nurture and challenge young people to grow as Disciples of Christ, in personal devotion, worship, fellowship, ministry, and leading others to Christ.
- Leadership Development - The NYI develops and implements a variety of ongoing ministries and special events to mentor and equip young people to be leaders for Christ and His church.
At my request, the district council approved allowing non-NYI participation in Bible Quizzing at the district level.
Currently, our regional rules will not allow participation beyond the district level. In the future, I hope to see this change.
The following requirements will be made on this eligibility:
- Christian schools may participate, but any students who attend a church with a team MUST participate with their church team.
- Home school groups will be treated as schools for the purposes of these determinations.
- If a home school group develops too wide of a geographic distribution, the district director reserves the right to force some geographical limitations on team divisions.
- Fees for non-NYI member participation will be higher than NYI participation due to the fact that NYI members support quizzing through their district budget money.
- Since some students at Christian schools may not attend a church regularly, regular school attendance will be sufficient for their participation.
- Non-NYI participants will not be eligible to quiz at the St. Louis Top Ten Quiz until the region approves non-NYI eligibility at that level.
